UP 1417
Title:  UP 1417
Description:  We had considered moving at this point, but the horn and eventually the headlight of LPG04 could be heard and seen returning. The train was already back up to trackspeed when it passed us, and another friendly hornshow from the engineer!

UP 7839
Title:  UP 7839
Description:  Then, soon after the local, UP 7839 led SLFCH, the brand new VIA set, under us at Flagg. I believe VIA has ordered 20-25 of these brand new trainsets that are planned to begin operating sometime this year or the beginning of next. They are interchanged with the CN in Chicago, and taken up to Toronto from there. Dad and I caught one by accident after the Nappanee Train Show back in April. Didnt think wed get a chance to see another one!

UP 7835
Title:  UP 7835
Description:  According to the Virtual Rail camera chat we had another eastbound headed our way. We thought we could make it into Ashton before it showed. And we did, sort of. Just not on the correct side of the tracks. UP ZLTG2 screamed by at every bit of 70 MPH by the grain elevator in town.

NS 4254
Title:  NS 4254
Description:  UP 6706 had already passed Nelson, so we knew we had to stay east of Dixon if we wanted to shoot it. We decided to move into Franklin Grove to see if we could catch UP 1111 again, but it ended up stopping east of town. We moved to the east side of town to find some nice open crossings, but there was nothing that either of us were too interested in. UP MNPPR was in front of MMTPR which had UP 6706 leading, so we set up for MMPPR at the intermediates just west of Franklin Grove. NS engines were up front, in the middle, and on the rear of this massive manifest as it slowly bobbed through the small rolling hills on the Geneva Subdivision.

Description:  The rear DPU on UP MNPPR splits the intermediates west of Franklin Grove as the 10 trains combined into one slowly continues east toward Chicago.

UP 6706
Title:  UP 6706
Description:  With no spots that really spoke to us west of Franklin Grove, we decided to go back west of town. UP 1111 and the coal train were still parked on the east side of town. So, we thought about trying a meet shot between UP 6706 and UP 1111 there. But, after a little more waiting, and right as UP 6706 got close, CHIBV fired up and continued west, which had us scrambling back into Ashton. Thankfully, we made it into town just as the gates were beginning to activate in town, and we were able to grab UP MMTPR cruise east through town with the only active CNW patch unit on the roster. The heritage unit and the real heritage both leading on the same trip. Awesome!

UP 6706
Title:  UP 6706
Description:  Roster shot of UP 6706. The word on the street was this unit was planned to be in the next batch of AC44 rebuilds at Jenks in Little Rock. With that, this very well would be the final train it ever lead, which would made this catch all the more special.

UP 584
Title:  UP 584
Description:  A Geep trailed 3rd out on UP MMTPR. With that, it was time to begin heading toward Iowa. We werent sure if there was anything else on the UP, so we decided to follow BNSF, despite not much happening on the Aurora Sub either.

BNSF 726
Title:  BNSF 726
Description:  While we were along the UP, BNSF R-CHI476-31 made a trip up to Oregon, IL to work the sand pit. They were lined back east to Rochelle once we began heading up there, and with the Fakebonnet facing east, we decided it was well worth getting another shot of the train somewhere outside of Rochelle. We decided to set up shop by the grain elevators at Chana, and it wasnt a long wait before the train came rolling by us eastbound. Couldnt have had much better catches around the Rochelle area this morning!

OMLX 503 and OMLX 411
Title:  OMLX 503 and OMLX 411
Description:  In Oregon, two Illinois Railway units sat between sand cars, one in Hudson Bay paint, the other in NS paint. I had a hunch these guys were working earlier today as well, but with all the special action happening on the UP, there was no point in leaving it behind to come up here on a hunch.

BNSF 8410
Title:  BNSF 8410
Description:  Traffic on the Aurora Sub was painfully slow today, which gave us enough time to sit down and eat at Dairy Queen in Oregon for lunch. After lunch, we continued on our way northwest toward Savanna. Finally, by the time we reached Milledgeville, we had a train coming at us. BNSF H-NTWBRC1-30 roars east through Milledgeville by the water tower and grain elevator with a SD70ACe leader. They would meet a westbound Z train in the siding west of here.

BNSF 6800
Title:  BNSF 6800
Description:  With no more eastbound traffic on the Aurora Sub, it was a straight shot into Savanna from Milledgeville. There were a few trains coming off and going onto the Barstow Sub at Savanna, and we were able to make it down to the searchlights guarding the diamond with the CP in town just in time to get X-ELPCSN5-22 splitting the pair on the north side.

BNSF 5650
Title:  BNSF 5650
Description:  Not even a minute later, XH-NTWTUL1-31 came down from the north. With the grain train still going through the interlocking, we had to just settle for the one searchlight on the south side of the diamond. Made for a cool portrait frame though.

BNSF 5309
Title:  BNSF 5309
Description:  The manifest ended up blocking out the DPU on the grain train, and with three units on the front of the manifest we assumed there would be nothing on the rear of it. We assume wrong. Oh well. H2s look good even without neat signals!

CP 2313
Title:  CP 2313
Description:  After both BNSF trains, CP K68 gets headroom across the diamond with a long hood forward GP20C-ECO, and comes up just far enough to inch by the signals on the west side of the diamond. I now finally have pictures of trains splitting all four pairs of signals!

CP 2313 and BNSF 4285
Title:  CP 2313 and BNSF 4285
Description:  CP K68 reverses back into the Savanna Yard as BNSF Z-CHCPTL3-31 sits at the diamond. We still arent sure why they allowed the CP local to run in front of a BNSF Z Train, but they did. Unfortunately for us, we couldnt sit and wait on the BNSF train to come north, as we still had an almost hour drive to Dubuque and were running out of time to pick up the rental car from Enterprise for tomorrow. So, with that, this is all we managed to get of the Z Train. But, this is a pretty neat shot nonetheless.

CP 8949
Title:  CP 8949
Description:  According to the CP Dispatch, there was a short time ethanol train that was coming off the Chicago Side that would be heading north on the Marquette Side soon, but we had run out of time to wait on anything. So, from Savanna it was straight into Dubuque. After we got the rental car, we checked into the hotel, then decided to go eat supper at Applebees down the road. After supper, we still had a little more daylight to kill. Shockingly enough, the ethanol train had still not yet gone through, but it was nearing town, so we went into downtown to grab it. Sure enough, CP 547 was lined north across the CN diamond and rolled through town with a classic CPKC duo.

BNSF 6019
Title:  BNSF 6019
Description:  The first three days were perfect weather, which is why it only made sense that we had to have at least one day where it was pouring down rain. We both got up early and went our separate ways. With the CP/KCS merger now a done deal, it was my goal to try to get several KCS leaders today. However, it was evident BNSF was going to send the most traffic through first, so it was off to the east side of the river. BNSF Z-CHCSSE8-01 begins my day in the pouring down rain at E. Dubuque.

BNSF 7372
Title:  BNSF 7372
Description:  I noticed I had a grain train facing south that was tied down south of East Dubuque, so I moved south. I soon discovered it had a H1 leader. But unfortunately it wasnt close enough to the road to get a solid photo of it. I would just have to wait for it to get recrewed. I did, however, have another northbound coming, which I stuck around for. H-GALMIN1-31 slowly works north as the rain continues to fall.

BNSF 7862
Title:  BNSF 7862
Description:  Almost right at the same time I had a pair of BNSF trains meeting on the other side of the river. However, something on US 20 east was causing a major slowdown and traffic was at a hault on the bridge. I had already committed so I had no way to turn around. Thankfully, I was able to find a small gap and get turned around before making a complete turn onto the bridge. But, that wasnt good enough, as my stack train had already passed southbound, and the northbound sand train, U-EOSEFC0-07 was approaching fast northbound. I made a dash on US 61 north into Wisconsin, and only made it in time for the DPU at the Eagle Lane Road overpass south of Rutledge. Oh well. Cant win them all.

BNSF 5944
Title:  BNSF 5944
Description:  Just as quickly as the trip came, it went, and we were on our final day. We had to make the long drive from Iowa all the way home today. So, instead of following CP to Clinton like we did in November when we had less daylight to work with, we decided to follow BNSF back instead. We grabbed some breakfast and checked out of the hotel. Almost immediately upon crossing the river, BNSF was sending southbound Q-PTLCHC6-29 through. We got down to the crossing in East Dubuque just in time.
