Wrong side
Title:  Wrong side
Description:  There was about an hour between 1730 and 1830 where there were no westbound trains scheduled on the Main Line between Mineola and Queens. The LIRR used that time to turn line into a double barreled shotgun for eastbounds, using both tracks for them. Heres one of the trains that passes Mineola on its way to Port Jeff running past the station wrong main. behind the engine that would later be named the Walter L Schlager, in honor of the retired LIRR president.

Nassau interlocking
Title:  Nassau interlocking
Description:  LI 607 brings up the rear of an Oyster Bay train taking the branch. In the photo, we see Nassau tower, and to its right, the power station that once supplied third rail power for the line that ran to a connection with the Hempstead Branch at Garden, a few miles south in Garden City, a line which was abandoned in the late 60s. I am standing on the extended platform, located where the connection to the branch once ran-it surved around to the right of the power station. Nassau was once a larger junction than now, with the Main Line going east and west, and connections to Oyster Bay and the south shore via the branch to Hempstead.

Wrong end east
Title:  Wrong end east
Description:  Typically, the push pull sets on Long Island ran with the power pack on the west end. This one seems to have gotten turned around, as the MP 15 providing train power is facing east, with GP 38-2 272 on the west end. The Stony Brook station is one of the more attractive stations on the island, surprisingly small considering it's adjacent to the SUNY Stony Brook campus, out of the photo to the left.

Description:  One of the improvements Long Island made in the mid 80s was to erect high level platforms at all stations. While this provided access for those in wheelchairs, it also detracted from the historic views of the stations. Double barrel
Title:  Double barrel
Description:  There was an hour or so in the late afternoon when there were no westbound trains scheduled, and the LIRR Main Line from Queens to Mineola was turned into a couble barrel shotgun, with trains running east on both tracks. The train on the left is an Oyster Bay train, which will take the branch at Nassau after making its Mineola stop. The train on the right is a local to Hicksville, making all stops, starting at Floral Park, the only eastbound Main Line train to do so. It was set up so that the Oyster Bay train would pass the local, cross over, and there would be time to restore the plant at Nassau before the local was due to leave. Most of the time, it actually worked.
