Album Info:Fascinating equipment from the 'Land of Smiles'! The Thailand Railroad System is state owned and operates about 2,500 miles of track reaching to all corners of the country. It was originally built as standard gauge but converted to meter gauge starting in 1919 to match up with the regions other rail networks. Thier equipment reflects a strong European influence. They have some preserved steam engines used on special occasions. Most of the locomotives run today are diesel electrics although they have a dwindling number of diesel hydraulic locos for service when the lowlands are in flood. The mix of power includes US, European and Japanese made locomotives and a number of DMU sets for commuter services. Bangkok city has a modern elevated 'Skytrain' [aka BTS] commuter service and a metropolitan rapid transit system known as MRT. All photos in this album were taken in Thailand. This album would have been impossible without the contribution and help of my cohort and now wife, Ms. B. Sarnt. [Some models, types, and locations could not be changed from the editor options. I will correct and update those as I can.]

Description:  We'ed just missed the last scheduled train to photo before sunset, so we were left with little choice other than to mosey around the platform a bit. Here at the far end of the station we found this speeder sitting on the switch to the main line. The overhead structure to the right is the BTS Skytrain commuter line station of the same name.

Description:  DMU leader 1138 peeks through the Chao Praya River bridge approaching the platform at Ayuthaya with an outbound commuter run. The prominent standpipe is one of 2 set here for watering the steam engines which make thier regular runs as far as here before reversing back to Bangkok. Ayuthaya is world famous for the nearby temple ruins with the face of a bhudda sticking out of some tree roots.
