CSS 101 & 8 - Chicago South Shore & South Bend |
Description: |
Beautiful sepia photo (left untouched) of two 1926 Pullman built interurban cars that was the backbone of the line before the newer Nippon Sharyo appeared in 1982. The orange cars, later crudely nicknamed "Crash-Rattle-Bang cars" as they neared the end of their service, were a familiar sight in northwest Indiana. L. Swanson photo |

CSS 803 - Chicago South Shore & South Bend |
Description: |
Another iconic item was this double headed "Little Joe" electric locomotive built by GE in May of 1949, originally ordered by Russia but cancelled, hence the nickname after Joseph Stalin. The unit has the 2-D-D-2 wheel arrangement. Luckily it survives at the Illinois Rwy Museum where it has been lovingly restored to its shiny brilliant orange and silver paint scheme. No date was given for this photo but it appears it was a rail fan trip in the mid-1960's. No photographer listed. |
