S.S.Pierce & Co 1859
Title:  S.S.Pierce & Co 1859
Description:  This August 15th 1859 Maine Railroad Corp receipt dates from before the Maine Centrals formation during the Civil War. If you lived in New England back in the post WWII era SS Pierce items showed up on the grocery shelves. As I recall their products were on the expensive side and of higher than average quality. A look in Wikipedia will prvide some back ground. The S.S.Pierce company was fromed in 1831 and eventually was sold to Seneca Foods of New Your in 1972. This company used the name into the 1980s. /DL

Track Gang on the CP
Title:  Track Gang on the CP
Description:  The notation on this old cabnet photograph says: - Ballast Train Canadian Pacific Ry. Moose River July 1st 1888 - There are 10 cars with 5 or 6 men per car.... It looks as though theyve just shoveled some sandy ballast off these flat cars. I expect their next job will be to ride the train back to the track side pit and reload them. Ive always wondered what sore of machine dug this wide ditch and did such a uniform job of it. C2018 this is Central Maine and Quebec track. /DL

Waiting for the Train
Title:  Waiting for the Train
Description:  c1885(?) Holeb was a wide space in the track on the Canadian Pacific back in its day. My map shows a couple of sidings at a location called Holeb which is about a mile west of this scene beside Holeb Pond looking eastbound. Today this track is operated by the Central Maine & Quebec & prior to that the MMA. Close inspection shows several sports and guide lakeside around the canoes. The station platform shows 4 waiting passengers and some baggage. It was common to take water transportation to sporting camps up and down the waterways of Maine from a RR stop. The CP, The MEC, and The BAR all advertised these connections and destination businesses. This scan of an old commerical cabnet photo was printed to advertise The Woods of Maine and was avalible as a Lantern Slide or enlargement upon request by E.R.Starbird of Brunswick, Me. /DL

Mount Waldo Granite Co #6
Title:  Mount Waldo Granite Co #6
Description:  The back of this old print says: - Mt. Waldo Granite Co 6 0-4-0T. Vulcan 1927 3684 B.M.Grenci 7/29/34 Mt. Waldo Maine - The quarry had an interchange with the BAR and operated about a mile of track much of which used a steam winch to rise and lower flat cars up and down the side of the mountain. This locomotive would have operated in a small yard at the stone works along side Marsh River in Frankfort and would have crossed what today is RT1A to handle the cars coming down the mountain a few hundred feet to the west. I belive the quarry was still in business into the 50s. In the early 70s the ROW and ties up to the mountain top were still in place as were the pullies which guided the cable around a couple of curves at the top of the hill. During my visit there about 1972 one of the stone cars were still on the the hill top but had been burned. Sure wish Id had a camera on the climb. Author is unknown. /DL
