The smoke plumes in the distance pinpoint the Brick Plant.

They are pulling a mixed-cargo freight train, and are about to enter the Allegheny Tunnel on their way to Conway Yard and points West. In the right foreground is the link to the westbound New Portage Secondary Track.

In this context, they're pushing a westbound mixed-cargo freight train that is already passing through the Allegheny Tunnel; in a matter of minutes, though, they'll uncouple and return to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." In the left foreground is the link to the westbound New Portage Secondary Track.

They are pulling a passenger train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve, and are about to pass through one of the tunnels at Gallitzin on their way to Pittsburgh and points West. Visible in the foreground is the westbound connecting track to the New Portage Branch.

Description:  Sweetland. Here is a photo by David R. Sweetland that was taken in Hyndman, Pennsylvania, in March of 1961. It was published originally in his (2000) book entitled "Pennsylvania Railroad Color Pictorial: Volume One ~ Altoona To New York City," page 57. Partial Caption: "'Ike' and 'Mike,' as they were later called, were pulling cars from the B&O interchange at Hyndman, Pa., in March 1961. The Baltimore & Ohio station in the background was situated along its main tracks." Prominent here (R to L) are PRR engines #5595 and #5597. Both are BS-7M switchers built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in May of 1950 and rated at 750 horsepower each. In this context, they're on their way back to Altoona ~ via Hollidaysburg ~ with the "Cumberland Local."
