Album Info:Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the summer of 2019, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

CN 4705
Title:  CN 4705
Description:  A CN local approaches the Main St. overpass as it traverses the east leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 23 Jun. '19. Train was returning from Menasha, and likely points beyond. The white building partially visible at right is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. The north leg of the wye can be seen beyond the trees to the left of the locomotive. Beyond that lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye.

Title:  CN 3200, CEFX 1024, EMDX 1605
Description:  A CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 23 Jun. '19. Train had four locomotives, CN 3200, CEFX 1024, EMDX 1605 pulling, as well as CN 3153 pushing. The lead locomotives are passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, previously Eggers Industries, founded as Hardwood Products Co. in 1910, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is visible in the background at left.

IC 9568
Title:  IC 9568
Description:  A CN local, with some unique, expedient hand-stenciling on the locomotive cab, crosses Washington St. after servicing Chemtrade (formerly General Chemical Corp.), 388 Ahnaip St., via former C&NW rails on Doty Island at Menasha, WI on 4 Jul. '19. It is difficult to imagine that then Washington Ave. was also Hwy. 41, until that highway was relocated to what was then the rural outskirts of the Fox Cities in the 1940s. U.S. Paper Mills Corp., 69 Washington St., Menasha, WI, an active rail customer, is visible in the background. This mill began production in 1891 as the John Strange Paper Co. It was purchased by Menasha Corp. in 1969 and renamed John Strange Paperboard Div. It was sold to U.S. Papers Corp. in 1981. It was sold to Sonoco ca. 2002.

IC 9568
Title:  IC 9568
Description:  A CN local approaches Milepost 1 and Garfield Ave. as it heads south via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 4 Jul. '19. The former Mondi Akrosil, LLC, facility, 206 Garfield Ave., is partially visible at right. Mondi moved the jobs to Pleasant Prairie, WI, circa '12. Originally Edgewater Paper Co., founded in 1917, which specialized in silicone coated release paper. It was purchased by Akrosil Corp., a holding company, in '69 but didn't change the name to Akrosil until Apr. '74. The Hammermill Paper Co. purchased Akrosil ca. '75, but apparently did not change the name. The facility operated as International Paper-Akrosil after International purchased Hammermill in '86. International sold some of its holdings, including this facility, to Kohlberg & Co., LLC, another holding company, in Jun. '05. Mondi Packaging, based in Vienna, Austria, purchased Akrosil in Jan. '06. There are remnants of a spur on the west side of the facility, but it has not received rail service for a long time. It appears to possibly be used for storage or warehousing.

IC 9568, CN 4711, CN 4705
Title:  IC 9568, CN 4711, CN 4705
Description:  A pair of CN locals face-off on the yard lead at the north end of the former SOO yard along Union St. at the former Adams St. grade crossing at Neenah, WI on 4 Jul. '19. Near local was waiting to return to the yard from Menasha and had one locomotive, IC 9568. Far local, throwing a little smoke, was preparing to cross over to the passing siding and head toward Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna, and had two locomotives, CN 4711 and CN 4705. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard (a few blocks to the south) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here. Adams St. was originally Washington St., until at least 1913. I'm curious to learn what Washington did to piss off the "great" City of Neenah.

DWC 200001
Title:  DWC 200001
Description:  DWC 200001and DWC 20000x were part of the consist of a CN through freight paralleling Union St. as it headed south past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 13 Jul. '19. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train to the right. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St. used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

Title:  GTW 5857
Description:  A CN local crosses N. Lake St. as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 27 Jul. '19. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is in the background. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1.

EJE 703
Title:  EJE 703
Description:  EJE 703 sorts cars at the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 27 Jul. '19. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

CN 5735, CN 5666, IC 9568
Title:  CN 5735, CN 5666, IC 9568
Description:  A CN through freight parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd./N. Lake St. and passes the approaches of the Roland Kampo Bridge (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) at the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 28 Jul. '19. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016). The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75, at the time it was simply a bridge to provide access to Hwy. 41 from Menasha. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange. It was recently reconstructed and expanded; the new, now full interchange was dedicated on 11 Jul. '18. The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, run parallel to the right. W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. becomes N. Lake St. underneath the Polish Connection. Modern maps tend to omit the W. for some reason, it is also absent on the current street sign, some old maps include the W., some old maps omit the W.

Description:  A CN local approaches N. Lynndale Dr. as it prepares to spot a car for Wisconsin Building Supply, 222 N. Lilas Dr., out-of-frame to left, via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 4 Aug. '19. Local was on its way back from New London. The east end of the Marketplace Shopping Center, 2700 W. College Ave., Appleton, WI, can be seen at left. This portion is currently vacant, since WG&R Furniture moved to their new facility at the intersection of W. Wisconsin Ave. and Hwy. 41. If I remember correctly, this shopping center was built around the old Prange Way store in the 1980s.

Title:  CN 4705
Description:  A CN local parallels Union St. and passes the former Caroline St. grade crossing as it heads north past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 24 Aug. '19. It looks like the train was headed for Waupaca. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

Description:  USA 8651/USAX 8651 at the National Railroad Museum, in Ashwaubenon, WI, on 25 Aug. '19. Built for the Army by Alco in 1945, it served in Iran during WWII. It was sent to Ft. Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, for sub-arctic testing in the early 1950s. After the tests were completed, it was sent to Ft. Holabird, MD, to be rebuilt. At some point it was acquired by the MILW, who used it to train Army Reserve transportation personnel at Milwaukee, WI. The National Railroad Museum acquired USA 8651 from the MILW ca. Feb. 1977. While the National Railroad Museum’s mailing address is Green Bay, it is actually located in Ashwaubenon.

Title:  IC 9605
Description:  A CN local parallels 4th St. and approaches Racine St. while working in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 28 Aug. '19. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously. Intertape Polymer Group (IPG), 741 4th St., is partially visible in the background, at the opposite end of the yard. The tan building partially visible to the left is the City Limits tavern or bar and grill, 544 4th St. The building was erected in 1960 for the local chapter of the Polish Falcons of America. Looking east from Racine St.

Description:  A CN local traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 28 Aug. '19. Local was headed for Waupaca. Local is passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The historic Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp., 635 Main St., and International Children's Fund, 619 Main St., is partially visible in the background. The oldest part of the facility dates to 1857, when the Moore & Wells foundry was established. The north leg of the wye is in the foreground. Looking west from Arrowhead Park, a large pile of gravel provided some much appreciated elevation.

Description:  A CN through freight parallels Hwy. 41 and passes the Hwy. G overpass as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 30 Aug. '19. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established on 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This once small, rural community included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any substantial remnants of the community remain, even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone (it is not a station on the CN system map). Train had three locomotives, CN 2859, CN 3201, CN 3179. A remnant of the former C&NW main line runs parallel along the other side of the train.

Description:  A CN local crosses S. Olde Oneida St. as it heads east via former C&NW rails in 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI on 31 Aug. '19. Train was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks. The C&NW depot stood just out-of-frame to the right. The MILW depot stood just out-of-frame to the left. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’
