Title:  Grand Canyon Railway 239
Description:  GCRY 239 idles in the yard at Williams. The unit was built in 1977 for Amtrak as an F40PHR, meaning it used parts from Amtraks SDP40F units, which were being phased out of service at the time. This unit used parts from SDP40F 544, and served with Amtrak for nearly 25 years before coming to Grand Canyon in 2003.

BNSF Eastbound Stacks
Title:  BNSF Eastbound Stacks
Description:  Four units lead an eastbound stack train towards Kingman. The four units, an ES44C4, two ES44DCs, and a NS C44-9W, are running elephant style. The fourth unit, Norfolk Southern 9381, was originally a C40-9W, built by GE in mid 1999. These units were ordered exclusively by NS, and were upgraded to 4400 horsepower on the early-mid 2010s.

Title:  Eastbound at Seligman
Description:  BNSF 8357 and 6368 are the lead units on a short train stopped at Seligman. 6368 is an ES44AC, built by GE in 2009. The 8357 is an ES44C4, externally similar to the ES44AC, but with 4 traction motors instead of 6. The center aaxle on each truck of an ES44C4 is an idler axle.

Title:  GCRY 301
Description:  Grand Canyon Railway 301 sits in the yard at Williams. 301 is one of several Budd RDCs rebuilt by Morrison-Knudsen into unpowered coaches ("Boise Budds"). These cars operated for several commuter railroads across the country, before coming to Grand Canyon from Caltrain, who sold the cars in 2005.

Title:  GCRY 4128
Description:  Grand Canyon 4128 warms up in the yard at Williams. The F40FH will be powering the Polar Express train out of Williams tonight, a seasonal train from Williams 17 miles up the line to a Christmas-themed village. This train operates with an F40FH on both ends, since there is no area to turn the train around between Williams and the Grand Canyon Depot.

Description:  Grand Canyon Railway 239 leads the southbound Williams Flyer into its namesake station. 239 was built for Amtrak in 1977 as an F40PHR. These units were similar to standard F40s, but used some components from Amtraks SDP40Fs, which were being traded in en masse at the time. The unit served with Amtrak for over 20 years, coming to Grand Canyon in the early 2000s. This picture was taken almost ten years to the day we first caught 239 in Williams.

GCRY 801
Title:  GCRY 801
Description:  Grand Canyon Railway 801 rolls south on the southbound Williams Flyer as it enters the station at Williams. 801 was originally a Boston & Maine RDC (Rail Diesel Car). In the mid 1970s, the RDC and several of its cousins were sold to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. The MBTA used their RDCs in their stock form for a few years, eventually sending them to Morrison-Knudsen to be rebuilt as unpowered coaches and cab-cars. The rebuilt cars were dubbed "Boise Budds" after the M-K plant in Boise, Idaho. The cars then served for Virgina Railway Express and Caltrain, before the latter sold the cars to Grand Canyon in 2005.

GCRY 2096
Title:  GCRY 2096
Description:  Grand Canyon Railway 2096 is placed mid-train on todays southbound Williams run. 2096 was originally a PRR car, operating on the Pennsys most prestigious trains. With the Penn Central merger, and Amtraks startup in 1971, the car ended up in Amtraks fleet of heritage cars. At an unknown date, the car made its way to Grand Canyon Railway.

ALCO In The Snow
Title:  ALCO In The Snow
Description:  Grand Canyon Railway 6776 sits silently on a side track in Grand Canyon Village, Arizona. The old unit is an FPA-4, essentially an ALCO FA built by Montreal Locomotive Works in Canada. This unit was one of 34 units built for Canadian National for passenger service, and was later handed over to VIA Rail after they took over passenger services in Canada. This unit and 6 other MLW, including two FPB-4 B-units, were sold to Grand Canyon Railway in the late 1990s, and were the staple locomotive of the railroad until the arrival of ex-Amtrak F40PHs. 6776 was taken out of service in 2009, and has been on display at Grand Canyon Village since 2016.

Grand Canyon Railway 2097
Title:  Grand Canyon Railway 2097
Description:  GCRY 2097 "Kokopelli" is one of several ex-Amtrak cars now operating on Grand Canyon. 2097 was originally built for the Great Northern in the mid-1950s by Budd. The car briefly ran for Great Northerns successor Burlington Northern, before going to Amtrak in 1971-72. The car operated with Amtrak for 12 years, before going to Alaska for a year to alleviate an equipment shortage on the Alaska Railroad. The car returned in 1985, and operated with Amtrak for another 14 years, going to Grand Canyon Railway in 1999.

Grand Canyon Railway 2095
Title:  Grand Canyon Railway 2095
Description:  GCRY 2095 "Anasazi" waits to depart from the Grand Canyon station. 2095 was built by Budd in 1950 for Southern Pacifc. The car was operated on the Golden State, a train between Chicago, Ilinois, and Los Angeles, California. With the end of the Golden State in 1968, the car was reassigned, before the formation of Amtrak in 1970 brought the car into the passenger railroads fleet. Somewhat ironically, the car operated 6 years longer for Amtrak than it did for SP, finally being sold to the Santa Fe Southern in 1996. The Santa Fe Southern in turn sold the car ot Grand Canyon Railway in 1998, where it has operated since.

Description:  Grand Canyon Railways 239 idles at the station in Grand Canyon Village. 239 was built for Amtrak in 1977 as an F40PHR. in the early 200s, this unit and several others were purchased by the Grand Canyon Railway, who was planning to replace their aging fleet of ALCO/MLW FPA4 units then in service. 239 was re-geared to freight speeds, and was redesignated to an F40FH to reflect this.

Southwest Forest Ind. 12
Title:  Southwest Forest Ind. 12
Description:  Southwest Lumber 12 sits on a piece of track in north Flagstaff. The Baldwin-built engine is a 2-6-6-2 Mallet, built in 1929 for Hammond Lumber Company, and originally had side tanks. The engine was relocated to Samoa, California in the 30s, and renumbered to 12. In 1951 and 1956, the engine was sold to new owners. coming to Southwest Lumber Mills in 1956. The unit had its side tanks removed in the late 50s, around the same time Southwest Lumber Mills rebranded as Southwest Forest Industries. In 1960, the unit was retired, and was originally on display in a park south of town. In 1994, the engine was moved to its current residence, along with a log car, and a Santa Fe caboose, CE-2 999455.
