CSX Manifest at Brookley Siding |
Description: |
I couldn’t identify the train symbol or the lead locomotive’s number, but I did manage to capture the trailing locomotive’s number being 5273! The train was sitting in the Brookley Siding as we came in for our final approach, and after we landed, a CSX manifest came flying by. Problem was, I didn’t hear it coming, and almost the entire train had passed by the time I got there. Didn’t help it was highballing through at track speed. |

Hawaiian Railway 302 |
Description: |
Got to ride a train, yes, a TRAIN, on the island of Oahu in Hawaii today for the Hawaiian Railway’s one and a half hour train ride on the ex USN mainline. The ride is along the only remaining mainline of the USN’s line that used to go all the way to Pearl Harbor! When the USN on Oahu ceased all rail operations, they donated, I’m pretty sure, all of their locomotives to the Hawaiian Railway Historical Society, where they still run a stretch of the old narrow-gauge main to this day, only carrying people instead of ammunition. I had the pleasure of riding in the cab of the 302 today, and at one point even got to blow for a crossing, which felt awesome! Today’s photos are all at the Historical Society, either at the museum or on tracks owned by them. Enjoy the photos! |

Hawaiian Railway 302’s cab |
Description: |
This is a shot of the interior/cab of Hawaiian Railway 302 (ex USN 65-00302). I had the unique opportunity to ride in the cab of this piece of history, as it has been in service since November of 1944! This locomotive originally served the US Navy on their mainline that stretched all the way to Pearl Harbor, and its main task was to haul ammunition for them. Eventually, however, it was retired and acquired by the HRHS, where it was restored back to working condition and serves now on the rails once again! The trip was fun, there were lots of cool things to see, and I even got to blow for a crossing at one point! |

MSE 64 and TASD 772 at Sibert |
Description: |
One of the biggest highlights of today!! Mississippi Export (MSE) 64, a shortline that is, as you would guess, Mississippi based. Pretty surprising to see it so far from home! I went around the corner and when I saw MSE 64, I was really struck with awe to encounter it here in Mobile! It seems to have been built in August of 1973, per thedieselshop.us, and used to have what appears to be duel gyralights mounted above the headlights at one period of time. At one point, however, it seems they took it off the engine, but left the mount on it. The mount still being there honestly threw me off and made it look like an ex Southern Pacific with the way the SP light package mounts looked. And the TASD 772 is a rebuilt RP14BD, and used to be an MP15DC lettered “City of Huntsville”. Honestly, I don’t really like that TASD rebuilt the MP15DCs and I ESPECIALLY don’t like that when they rebuild the MP15DCs (excluding TASD 802 “City of Florence”), that they take away the “City of” when they rebuild and repaint into TASD green. |

Hawaiian Railway 302’s builder’s plate and oiling/greasing instruction plate |
Description: |
The twin plates right below where I was sitting in the cab of HRHS 302 (ex USN 65-00302)! The larger plate on top is the builder’s plate. This plate basically tells people the locomotive’s build number, class number, type, manufacturer, and location of manufacture. The smaller, black plate on the bottom contains the instructions on how to correctly oil and grease the locomotive. This plate seems to have also been installed by the Rochelle, IL Locomotive Shops. |
