CGW LO 20
Description:
Chicago Great Western Railway LO 20 in BN's at Cicero, Illinois yard on September 24, 1983, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. According to the October 1971 issue of the Official Railway Equipment Register (ORER), this was one of 43 airslides in the 3-45 number series. It is stencilled: BLT 7-60 and reweighed CNW 5-83. This was the lowest number CGW freight car I photographed, car #1 was a 71 foot flatcar.

CGW NW2 23
Description:
Chicago Great Western Railway NW2 23 in Chicago, Illinois on May 9, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in May 1948 (c/n 5543) on EMD Order E916, retained its CGW number briefly while in C&NW's employ, was renumbered to C&NW 1026 in 1971, traded to EMD in August 1986 and scrapped by Saint Louis Auto Shredding, Madison, Illinois. It has one unusual characteristic for an NW2, it has a full height radiator, not clearly illustrated by this photo but there are other photos of #23 on this site that clearly show the radiator. Locomotives built after this one still have the typical NW2 half height radiator, so my guess is that it might have had an accident that required the replacement of the radiator after the full height radiator was introduced by EMD. If anyone has any further information about this, a comment would be greatly appreciated. Edit: I joined the Yahoo.CGW Group to find more info, and two members (Tim Vana and Dustin D. Smith) offered the following: (from Tim): IIRC, this (unit) was wrecked or otherwise returned to EMD for rebuild. The only hoods available would have full radiators as used on all-post NW2 EMD switchers. Several railroads (e.g. Missouri Kansas Texas (MKT) rebuilt their NW2's with SW1200 style full radiators. (from Dustin): CGW 23 was sent to EMD for repair in 1959. (It was involved in minor wreck, needing minor body rebuild. The image I have seen of the unit at EMD, the damaged was indeed minor and doubtful that the hood was replaced with the larger grill but rather patched or maybe at most, the first section was replaced. CGW 23 still had its stepped hood after the minor rebuild suggesting the hood was not entirely replaced. What is also interesting is this was the first EMD NW2 repainted on the CGW (away from its factory paint scheme into Maroon Dip). The unit also appeared to receive the modern front and rear handrails with drop steps. Note that the bell has a rope attached.

CGW DS4-4-1000 36
Description:
Chicago Great Western Railway DS4-4-1000 36 at Saint Charles, Illinois on March 13, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built by Baldwin in July 1949 (c/n 74227). It kept this road number when it became C&NW property in July 1968, and was traded to EMD in January 1969. It is dead in this westbound train, and judging from the condition of the front steps, it is likely enroute for repairs to Oelwein, Iowa, the location of the CGW shops.

Chicago Great Western Railway RS2 54 at Randolph, Minnesota on February 12, 1975, Kodachrome by J. H. Nixon, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in August 1949 (c/n 77186), it was one of eight RS2's (#'s 50-57) on the CGW roster. All went to the C&NW in the July 1968 merger, and retained their CGW numbers. This particular unit was the last locomotive on the C&NW in CGW paint, and the last operating RS2 on the C&NW. It was in service at Randolph, MN September 1976, at Huron, SD during October 1979, and was retired February 17, 1981 and sold to Precision National Corp, Mount Vernon, Illinois.

Description:
Chicago Great Western Railway F3 113A in Chicago, Illinois on October 31, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in February 1949 (c/n 5989) on EMD Order E963A, it became C&NW 113A after the July 1968 merger, and in 1971 it was renumbered 212 (2nd). This model is sometimes referred to as an F5 because it was built with F3 components but upgraded (D27B) traction motors, although EMD never had an F5 in their catalog. It was retired in June 1985, traded to EMD, and scrapped by Saint Louis Auto Shredding, Madison, Illinois.

CGW F3 113C
Description:
Chicago Great Western Railway F3 113C in Saint Paul, Minnesota on February 5, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in February 1949 (c/n 5990) on EMD Order E963A, it retained the CGW road number for a few years after the July 1968 merger, renumbered to 213 in 1971, retired, traded to EMD and scrapped by Saint Louis Auto Shredding (Madison, Illinois) in June 1985. Some folks refer to this as a model F5, however, EMD considered it an F3, built with F3 components in the latest carbody refinement which carried over to the first production F7's. It was equipped with upgraded traction motors (D27B), thus setting it apart from earlier F3's.

CGW F3 114C
Description:
Chicago Great Western Railway F3 114C in Chicago, Illinois, August 20, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in February 1949 (c/n 5992) on EMD Order E963A, it retained the CGW road number when the CGW and C&NW merged in July 1968, and was sold to Chrome Crankshaft sometime before 1971. Often erroneously referred to as an F5, this was a Phase IV F3, built in the final F3 carbody which carried over to the Phase I F7, but using EMD D27B traction motors. There was no F5 in EMD's catalog.

Description:
Chicago Great Western Railway F3 115C in Chicago, Illinois on August 20, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in February 1949 (c/n 5994) on EMD Order E963A for six F3A's. Sometime after July 1, 1968, it became C&NW 216. It is a Phase IV F3, utilizing the carbody the has become accepted as the F7 carbody, although from EMD's point of view, it is the improved F3 carbody carried over to the F7. The spotting difference is up on the roof: a Phase IV F3 has a pair of rectangular grid openings behind the cab for the dynamic brakes (if so equipped), and a Phase I F7 has a 36 inch fan.
