A G5 comes to a stop at Huntington(note the UN telegraph code on the train order mast) some time around 1940. At the time, the easternmost point on the Port Jefferson Branch was Wading River; I don't know if the train originated there or at Port Jeff. It will continue into Jamaica. This is a far cry from the Huntington of today. The electrification was extended here in 1970, and MU's now run here every 30 minutes most of the day, with a change to diesel trains for the rest of the ride to Port Jeff. It's also a lot more built up!! The photo was given to me by a friend who found it while cleaning out his grandmothers attic about 35 years ago. Dont know the photographer, but its a sweet shot. The Pennsy parentage of the locomotive is apparent, not only by design, but by the NL on the pilot beam, denoting the New York Division, LIRR. |

In 1978, the LIRR extended a couple of Ronkonkoma trains to Yaphank in response to the growing traffic as population on Long Island grew. Aside from the benefit to far east end riders, the bonus to fans was that they usually drew a C 420, which was becoming a rare event in those days, as the GP 38s had largely taken over the passenger duties. I caught one at Ronkonkoma, almost close enough to grab it. This was early in my photography career, and I still had a thing or two to learn about composition. |

This is not the greatest shot. I probably took it with the 110 Instamatic I was using then, in my early rail photograpy days, but it catches a transitional time on the LIRR. We see an Alco in the MTA blue/yellow scheme from the late 60s with a passenger train, something that would very shortly become a rarity, as the GP 38s had been delivered; an MP 15 poking out behind a train in the center of the photo, probably the only place in America where they were used in passenger service; and two of the aforementioned GP 38s, one at far right, the other just poking a nose out behind the Alco. These units would be hold sway on diesel trains for almost the next 30 years. |

The Port Washington Branch almost never saw diesel trains in regular service. The one exception was when we had a lot of snow. The winter of 1977-78 was one of those times, with several heavy snowstorms in January and Febrary of 1978. There was enough to get the diesels out, since the third rail was snow covered and the M 1s were not able to get good contact. I caught LIRR 261 about to arrive at the Little Neck station with a connection from Woodside. |

Glimpse of greatness |
Description: |
I rode the cab of an Oyster Bay train into Hunterspoint Av as part of a rider outreach program in 1978. This gave me vantage points I would not have otherwise had, such as this view out the window of FA 610 near Harold tower. The partial engine is SW 1001 105, one of a pair of units-the other was 101-kept there as protect power to pull an M 1 train out of the tunnel if it became necessary. That engine is not the star here. Down in the hole, partly obscured, is GG 1 4877, then a Conrail unit, pulling into the turning loop that trains from Penn Station use to get into Sunnyside Yard. In three more years, that engine will be repainted into the red PRR Congressional scheme, and live out the remaining two years of its existence running commuters at high speed between New York and South Amboy. |

Sleepy station |
Description: |
The look of the Ronkonkoma station area is that of a sleepy outpost in the pine barrens. This was the terminus of most trains on the Main Line at the time-the LIRR had just extended a pair of rush hour runs to Yaphank-but was a fairly quiet place, compared to its counterparts on the north(Port Jeff) and south (Babylon and Patchogue) shores. There was a single track main, and a small yard with a wye just east of the station. The station had an agent/op who handled tickets and cleared trains past block station KO, as well as handing up orders to freights. In ten years, this will be a completely different place. We see a westbound preparing to depart with the typical train set, an FA on the west end, three cars(five was more common), and a GP 38 on the east end. |

I dont know why I didnt take this shot more. It gives a panoramic view of Nassau interlocking, just east of the Mineola station. We see a westbound Ronkonkoma train approaching the tower and the connection to the Oyster Bay Branch, diverging to the left. The scene would change over the next ten years, as the platforms were extended due to ridership growth and the longer trains run to accommodate it. The westbound platform would be extended to the crossing next to the tower. The eastbound platform would be extended almost to the tower, the home signal for the branch moved closer to the tower as well. The brick building to the right was the power station for the Main Line, whose electrification ended here til 1970, the short segment of electrified Oyster Bay Banch to East Williston, and the now defunct branch through Garden City to Hempstead, which diverged to the right here til about 1970, running behind the stores on Franklin Av to a connection with the Hempstead Branch and Mitchell Field Secondary at Garden tower. I recall seeing Alco S types there in the 1960s, but only rarely. |

The Greenport Scoot, the connecting train that ran from Ronkonkoma to Greenport and back in the mid day, blows through Manorville in a hurry behind an MP 15, at least fast enough to blur the photo from an instamatic, as it hustles its single coach back for a New York connection. In the late 70s, the LIRR discontinued its bus service on the east end, reinstating trains on all the off peak Greenport and Montauk runs the buses had supplanted. This was the happy result. I missed the good stuff by about a year, though. Up til spring 1977, this run was handled by an RS 3. |

After painting GP 38-2 252 with a red stripe when delivered to honor the Bicentennial, the LIRR later thought it would apply the scheme to all its GP38s, calling it "Surfs Up." Here we see the unit that would later be named in honor of LIRR president Walter Schlager in that scheme. To the left is LIRR 105, one of the Harold Protect units, that carried adapter couplers to pull MU trains out of the East River tunnel if needed. It would later get a retro dark gray and orange scheme reminiscent of the 1950's and 60's, complete with a Dashing Dan herald. |
