CNJ Southern Division |
Description: |
The former CNJ Southern Division, once the main line that hosted the Blue Comet, is now a backwater of the Conrail system. Here we look south from BANK tower, where the line leaves the NY & Long Branch, and heads for south Jersey. The track on the left is now cut, but the signals remain. A CR GP15-1 waits out the weeked to cover what freight remains on the line. Its sparse enough at this stage that the train is left on the main. |

Chemical Coast power |
Description: |
One of the more important locations on the Conrail system was the ex CNJ between Oak Island and Perth Amboy NJ, where many of the oil companies had refineries and chemical plants. Its the place that many think of when New Jersey is mentioned. Conrail generated a lot of revenue here, to the point of having two dedicated trains originate here daily at the time of this photo, CCAL to Allentown, and CCPI to Conway. Heres some of the local power that gathered all that traffic, as seen from the Jersey Turnpike. |

A local with a B23-7 pulls its train into Allentown. I always liked this view of the yard. It looks like a model railroad, with all the different cars from different roads. The variety could sometimes be stunning. In this view, there are CR hoppers on the far track, some still in their PC and EL markings, as well as PC gons on the local. Note the Clinchfield car on the near track, and flatcars with tanks behind the train. |

Description: |
The ex CNJ line that runs along the Jersey Turnpike near Port Newark was called the Chemical Coast Secondary by Conrail, because it served mostly oil refineries and chemical plants. There was a train that originated there, CCAL, that ran to Allentown. It was easy to spot, having mostly tank cars. Here it is with 118 cars on the ex LV bridge over the Delaware, shortly to arrive in Allentown. |

An SD38/MT 6 hump set pushes the last cars of this cut over the top at the Allentown Yard. CGAL's power is sneaking up on the hump to roll past on its way to the engine facility. |

CGAL power |
Description: |
This must have been the only way to get CGALs power back from the east end of the yard. It has dropped its train and is now rolling over the hump to get to the other end. |

New Market Pond |
Description: |
There was a park in Piscataway NJ where the brush had been cleared from along the tracks, allowing a good view of the action. We see ALOI and 66 cars passing behind a representative sample of GEs. |
