Monkey in the middle |
Description: |
The LIRR was not your typical freight carrier. Their focus was primarily commuters, and they are the busiest commuter road in the US, with 90% of their revenue coming from passengers. Their freight operations were largely an afterthought under the MTA, and could get kind of odd. One such unusual practice was running power mid train. This facilitated switching facing point customer sidings, of which there were quite a few. Thus we find RF 7 with C 420 227 working from the middle as it passes Jamaica station on one of the bypass tracks south of track 8. |

Morning line up |
Description: |
A set of C 420s is on the ready track at Holban Yard, ready to move out with whatever the yardmaster has put together for them. Theyll go east later in the day. Holban, a combination of HOLlis and st alBANs, sat between the two sections of Queens, in a triangle shape, bounded by the Main Line on the north, and the Montauk Branch on the south. The Montauk Branch is seen behind the power, its viaduct crossing over the eastbound Main Line and yard lead just west of the yard at a place called Hillside, where there was an abandoned station. It is used by trains going to Babylon, as well as a few diesel trains going farther east. |

RF extra |
Description: |
A single MP 15 rolls east through Hicksville station with a handful of cars. RF 65 has just passed through in the opposite direction, so this train is not the return of RF 65 to the south shore. LIRR freight operations could be confusing at times. This is one of them!! MP 15's were the common power for the outlying locals at the time. The RS 3's were gone about three years at this point, and the remaining C 420's were on the "road" trains from Yard A to the east end, and sometimes still held down a commuter run. |

RF 65 rolls down track 2 after coming off the Main Line from Pinelawn. This could be a squeeze of any of the cars were wide enough. It was not uncommon for a faster moving train to bounce off the platforms. Note the PRR style pedestal signal to the right of the train. |

RF 65 |
Description: |
I was knocking around Nassau County, shooting whatever rail activity I found, and went up on the platform at Hicksville. Freights on the Island at the time were a some time thing, and could be really unpredictable, since they were shoehorned between the many commuter trains. So it was pure dumb luck I caught this RF 65 coming in from off the Central Branch with a pair of MP 15s, the power that would lead this train for most of the next 30 years, and a short train. Note the Pennsy influence in the position light pedestal signals at the end of the platforms. |

Cabin |
Description: |
LIRR used the Pennsy term for caboose, so this is a cabin car. They were common on the Long Island at least til the late 1980s. This one trails RF 65 through Hicksville station. The yard is about 1/2 mile ahead. |

On the Main Line |
Description: |
RF 65 approaches Hicksville station on the Main Line, coming in from Pinelawn. It will work the yard, just west of the station, then go back out to either the Port Jeff Branch, or to the south shore to work for the day, before repeating the process and returning to Pinelawn later in the day. Hell be tied up before evening rush hits. The position light signal at right gives away the LIRR's Pennsy heritage. |

The power for the freights running from Holban Yard often sat out on a ready track along the main line. At that time, C420s were the usual power on the road trains, with MP15s handling the lighter work. Heres a pair of Centuries and an MP15 waiting for their next trip east in the evening. |

Westbound extra |
Description: |
This westbound extra train snuck through Mineola in the teeth of rush hour, something that was very unusual on the Long Island, where only about 10% of their revenue was from freight. It was not uncommon to see freights on some of the lines in Chicago, where they were not shy about mixing a 100 car train in with the "dinkies"; It was almost unheard of here. |

RF 7 |
Description: |
RF 7 was a daytime train that was a maid of all work on the west end. It started at Fresh Pond, taking cars to Yard A at Sunnyside, then worked out to the Island, most typically on the Atlantic Branch and the near south shore, but could also work the Main Line, such as it is doing here at Mineola with a short train. Usually it got a pair of C 420's; today's edition has a single MP 15. |

RF 65 |
Description: |
RF 65 originated at Pinelawn and worked west on the Main Line to Hicksville, then either up the Port Jefferson Branch, or to the Montauk Branch via B tower and the Central Branch. Here we see it passing through the new high level platforms at Farmingdale just after the morning rush making its trip to Hicksville to work the yard there, then on to the rest of the days assignments. |

RF 65 works along the main |
Description: |
RF 64 and 65 were Hicksville based trains that worked alternate days on the Port Jeff and Montauk branches. They also worked in the Farmingdale area on the Main Line. Here we see RF 65 approaching B tower in Bethpage as it heads for Hicksville. |

Working on the railroad |
Description: |
C 420 223 has a work train under control as the construction continues for the electrification project that will bring better and faster service to central Long Island. LIRR had little freight equipment of its own, just some MOW cars, so had to use other roads cars for projects, such as the C&O gon behind the power. Opening day is only 15 months off. |

Museum operation |
Description: |
No, not the Alcos, though they are getting close. The RR Museum of Long Island is adjacent to the Riverhead station. The power from RF 62 passes while working the team tracks there, in view of one of LIRRs unique double deckers. |

Local power |
Description: |
Long Island had a small yard at Pinelawn. The power there was usually an MP 15, but occasionally would be one or two C 420s. Today I got lucky and caught a pair of Centuries there. Note the maintenance trucks at right. LIRR kept the blue/yellow on its vehicles long after the trains went to blue and white. |

RF 62 nears Riverhead |
Description: |
RF 62 is almost to where it will do most of its work today, passing Calverton, one of the more unremarked points on the LIRR. There is not much here at this time, just some relay rail. There was once a station, now long gone. Trains quit stopping here in the 70s. |
