Album Info:Fascinating equipment from the 'Land of Smiles'! The Thailand Railroad System is state owned and operates about 2,500 miles of track reaching to all corners of the country. It was originally built as standard gauge but converted to meter gauge starting in 1919 to match up with the regions other rail networks. Thier equipment reflects a strong European influence. They have some preserved steam engines used on special occasions. Most of the locomotives run today are diesel electrics although they have a dwindling number of diesel hydraulic locos for service when the lowlands are in flood. The mix of power includes US, European and Japanese made locomotives and a number of DMU sets for commuter services. Bangkok city has a modern elevated 'Skytrain' [aka BTS] commuter service and a metropolitan rapid transit system known as MRT. All photos in this album were taken in Thailand. This album would have been impossible without the contribution and help of my cohort and now wife, Ms. B. Sarnt. [Some models, types, and locations could not be changed from the editor options. I will correct and update those as I can.]

SRT4039BKK
Title:  SRT4039BKK
Description:  Shades of the Rio Grande! State Railway UM12C No. 4039 readys to leave Bangkok central station. This is the current paint scheme for these units. This series are cousin to the WP&Y's shovelnose GE's. Recent news from SRT is that these UM 12's days may be numbered, as there is an order of new locos from China which will replace the series. They make a wonderful chant as they buzz about, too!

Title:  50 years old and she's got it goin on!
Description:  Freshly painted and low numbered UM12C 4005 waits to start another run out of Hua Lamphong Station. After getting this photo the engineer came back into the cab and instantly put her from idle to run 9, either to do a load test or air up fast: she responded flawlessly and made an awesome sound show heard throughout the station!

Oil Bath!
Title:  Oil Bath!
Description:  In urgent need of major TLC, SRT UM12C 4022 scurries about switching cars at Hua Lamphong Station. The poor thing was running fine, either she was next to another unit which had a spectacular fail, someone missed the mark fueling up, or she 'soiled' herself ['ouch!' -4022's a GE after all!]. I photo'd her on Dec. 5 sans those nasty oil stains!

SRT4001BKK
Title:  SRT4001BKK
Description:  In a sad looking condition, SRT 4001 readys her train to leave Bangkok Central station in this 2013 photo. [One of my very first contributions to the RRPA website!] I was very lucky to find her, as this is the class engine in her series and is among the oldest still operating class of power on the SRT. This nearly 50 year old GE is a model UM12C which is a cousin to our WP&Y shovelnoses, having 2 660 hp engines which make a delightful chortle as they bustle about. She is in very faded but original paint.

Description:  SRT 4211 is from the second#order of AD24's built in 1980. Her 'royal birthday seal' and Burachatra show well in this shadow side view. Most all types of SRT diesel power have extensively open carbody panels to maximize engine room cooling.

SRT 850, 824 Rgst
Title:  SRT 850, 824 Rgst
Description:  SRT pacific No. 850 passes under an inactive set of giant 'Rabbit ear' signals with a private charter excursion ahead of impending rain. This is the first time we catch her leading, usually sister 824 [trailing] is doing the honours. She is in enviously fine form here! It is customary for the SRT to doublehead steam excursions back to back as there are no places to turn the engines enroute.
