Title:
PRR 4592, I-1S, 1935
Description:
Here is a photo via Paul W. Prescott that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 10 August 1935. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #4592 and #6843. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #4592 is an I-1S constructed during September of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in May of 1936, and retired in February of 1952. #6843 is an M-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" built in September of 1926 and retired in March of 1957. In this context, they're pulling a westbound mail and express train around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the "Decapod" will be uncoupled and returned to Altoona for another assignment. Gary Mittner Collection.

Title:
PRR 6843, M-1, 1940
Description:
Here is a photo by H.W. Pontin via Rail Photo Service that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in July of 1940. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6843 and an "I" Class (2-10-0) "Decapod" whose road number is not recorded. #6843 is an M-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during September of 1926 and retired in March of 1957 after 31 years of faithful service. In this context, they're passing the Kittanning Point Station with a manifest freight train that's about to round the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Partially visible in the center is four-track Signal Bridge #2416/7. John S. Fisher Collection; #1 of 14.
