CB&Q E8 9940A
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9940A on Train 21, the Morning Zephyr at Waterman, Illinois, February 18, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built January 1950 (c/n 9679), became BN 9940, later 9903, then IC 102 and as of 06/11/08 became CN 102. It is pictured on the westbound Morning Zephyr which usually rated only two motors (CB&Q term for Locomotive). Also, the Zephyr has two dome observation cars in the consist, one cut in behind the motors but ahead of the baggage car. The second dome observation is running backwards coupled to the baggage car, the third car in the consist. Around this time, the CB&Q dispatched Train 21 with the observation running backwards to save switching charges at Saint Paul, but I cannot explain the first dome behind the motors except to speculate that it is a ferry move to get the dome in position for another assignment.

CB&Q E8 9941A
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9941A eastbound on Train #30 at Naperville, Illinois, June 9, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Train #30 was the Ak-Sar-Ben (Nebraska, spelled backwards) Zephyr, the daily Lincoln to Chicago overnight Zephyr which also handled mail, not to be confused with the CB&Q-C&S Train #30, the 'Nightcrawler', a daily Denver to Billings passenger train. It's possible this train also contains parts of Train #56, the American Royal Zephyr, which ran between Saint Joseph-Kansas City, Missouri and Chicago. According to the June 1965 edition of The Official Guide, both trains arrived in Galesburg at slightly different times, but both departed at 4:45 AM CST, with both trains due to arrive at Chicago Union Station at 7:50 AM CST. There is a schedule in the Employees Timetable #10 for #30 between Galesburg and Chicago, but none for #56, suggesting that the trains were combined.Note the new gallery car cut in third car back. The CB&Q was in the process of receiving new bi-level commuter coaches from Budd around this time, including six with control cabs to initiate push-pull service on the Chicago-Aurora commuter line. In order to avoid Illinois state sales tax, the new cars were routed from the builder to Lincoln, Nebraska, weighed, and returned to Chicago on the next available train.

CB&Q E8 9941B
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9941B, Chicago Union Station (CUS), May 19, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in March 1950 (c/n 9682) on EMD Order 2012A, it became BN 9934 sometime after March 2, 1970, was sold to Amtrak August 1, 1972 and was renumbered to 333, was retired and scrapped in 1977.This is as far east as you could go on the CB&Q, although technically, the CB&Q tracks ended a couple of miles behind this train at about Union Avenue, and this train is on CUS Company rails. This locomotive had just brought a Dinky into Union Station, the class lights are on and red, now what? I asked Karl Rethwisch, a retired CB&Q (and BN) Engineer about the procedure of getting the Dinkys out of the station, and here is his relpy:First, while still inbound and passing 14th Street, I would cut the steam off to the train so the line would be safe to disconnect by the Carmen in the yard. Once in the Depot we'd unload the passengers, wait for the back up signal and then - - back up. These moves were controlled by the back-up hose as were all such operations in those days (pre radio). The Switchtender under 12th Street would have to line us into the assigned track and indicate to the rear man that we were indeed lined in. Proceeding up the lead we would shove to the limit of the yard track and stop. The stop was courtesy of the back up hose. We, the Engineer and Fireman, were done for that leg of the trip. At some time later, the Hostler would come and gather up the engines and run 'em over to the pit for servicing and turning. Later in the day the Hostler would bring the engines back to the trains to which assigned and we'd do it all over again only this time, in the reverse order of the morning move.

CB&Q E8 9942A
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9942A on Train #21, the westbound Morndng Zephyr (Twin Cities Zephyr) at Aurora, Illinois on March 21, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This particular E8 has its original painted side panels. Records indicate that it was never retrofitted with stainless steel panels, though many of this ordr (2012) of E8's were. It was not until the third order of E-8's (2048) that the locomotives came from the builder with stainless steel plates as original equipment.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9942B on westbound Train #1, the Denver Zephyr, on May 23, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built during March 1950 (c/n 9684), it became BN 9935 on March 2, 1970. It was sold to the West Suburban Mass Transit District (WSMTD) August 18, 1972 and leased back to the BN. During February 1974, it was rebuilt as E9Am 9900 by Morrison-Knudsen in Boise, Idaho. It was named (in 1978) "Don H. King" and was leased to the BN under contract with the RTA (still owned by the WSMTD) until retired in January 1993. I do not know its final disposition.

CB&Q E8 9942A
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9942A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on July 23, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in March 1950 (c/n 9683) on EMD Order 2012A, it became BN 9942 (after 3/2/1970), became Amtrak 337 (after 8/1/1972), and was retired and sold for scrap May 28, 1975. It is seen here as the rear unit of a Friday evening eastbound push-pull Dinky. All the locomotives were MU'ed together, so that's at least 9000 horsepower pushing a single coach. After the rush hour trains arrived in Aurora, the Burlington needed to get the locomotives back to Chicago for service and rotation into Zephyr service. This is likely Train #154, daily passenger due out of Aurora at 6:15 PM and arriving at Union Station at 7:15 PM. The process would be reversed on Sunday evening with locomotives off Zephyr service run out to Aurora on a single car Dinky for Monday morning rush hour. This situation would have been a bit different only a couple of months earlier. The CB&Q had just received gallery cab cars from Budd and had only recently started push-pull service. The previous procedure was to turn all the locomotives (cabs facing east) and head them back to Chicago pulling a single coach.

CB&Q E8 9943A
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E-8 #9943A westbound at Naperville, Illinois, May 9, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I lived along the Burlington's triple track main line during 1962-1966 in Naperville and I photographed a few trains during that time. One of the memories I have was the shuffle of the E-units between Aurora and Chicago. On Friday evening, after their assigned runs, the commuter E's would be run back to Chicago for service/rotation, and on Sunday evening, replacements would be run back out to Aurora for Monday morning rush hour trains. The CB&Q rotated their E-units between Zephyr assignments and commuter service. The commuter service (in CB&Q parlance, the commuter service trains were known as Dinkys) was westbound from Chicago to Aurora in the evening, so at the end of Friday, the E's in Aurora were run back to the Zephyr Pit at 14th St. in Chicago on the next eastbound Dinky, to be serviced/inspected and placed in Zephyr service, and the locos coming off Zephyr service would be assigned to Dinkys. One of the chores of the rotation would be the replacement of brake shoes, and this photo illustrates the E's showing off their new shoes as they were run back west to Aurora for the Monday morning rush hour. The train behind this one would have about 5 E's and one coach. All (except the coach) would have blazing brake shoes as the approached the stop at the Naperville station (behind me in this photo). This usually happened late in the evening. I have a photo of this event, but it is just brake shoe glow. I imagine the engineer had an easy time with the schedule, I believe the loco's were all MU'd, so he probably had good acceleration.

CB&Q #9943B
Description:
A CB&Q E8A (it's either #9943A or #9943B; I'm leaning towards #9943B) and i #993x-series E7A are the power for a mail train, with a WWII-era troop sleeper rebuilt to an express boxcar first out (might be NYC-owned), followed by 3 heavyweight baggage-express cars (first of these is C&O), 3 more ex-WWII troop sleepers rebuilt to express boxcars, the next car or two might be RPO's, and the last car appears to be a lightweight b|ggage-express (this would more than likely be a "rider" car). A number of these express boxcars and baggage-express cars would be in pos}al storage service, and would therefore be locked. Scanned with an Epson V550 from a duplicate 35mm slide, brand is unknown. Photographer is unknown; date, month, and year are aprroximate.

CB&Q E8 9943B
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9943B westbound on Train #17, The California Zephyr, Naperville, Illinois, June 24, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Business is a little better than usual, there are two flat top coaches cut in between the baggage car and the first dome coach. This locomotive was built in April 1950 (c/n 9686) on EMD Order 2012A, became BN 9936, and was sold for scrap to Precision National in June 1981. It is seen here 27 miles from Union Station in Chicago, half way between Lisle and Naperville, about a half hour into its overnight journey to Denver, where the CB&Q power will be replaced with D&RGW power. The CZ will continue through the Rocky Mountains arriving at Salt Lake City, Utah, where the D&RGW power will be replaced by WP power for the final leg of the journey to Oakland, California, 2525 miles from its starting point. Two days from this photo date, this same locomotive will return to Chicago leading Train #10, The Denver Zephyr.

CB&Q E8 9943B
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9943B & O1a 4960 at Aurora, Illinois on June 26, 1965, Koadchrome by Chuck Zeiler. It's a busy moment at the Aurora, Illinois Depot as a freight passes though and Train #10, The Denver Zephyr arrives for its 8:45 AM CST stop. This being summer, it's 9:45 DST locally, and Extra 4960 West waits for the trains to clear the circuit before proceeding on a fantrip to Oregon, Illinois and return. By almost anyone's standards this was an unusual fantrip, the feature of this trip was that it was a working way freight. In addition to the usual baggage car (for tape recording and hanging your head out), open gondola, air-conditioned coaches and snack car, the trip had freight cars to be set out at various industries along the way.

CB&Q E8 9943A
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9943A westbound at Berwyn, Illinois on June 27, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built during March 1950 (c/n 9685), became Burlington Northern 9943 after the BN merger March 2, 1970, became Amtrak 338 on August 1, 1972, retired May 28, 1975 and sold for scrap during July 1975 to H. Koppell Co. of Boise Idaho. It's Sunday, the clue being three locomotives and two coaches on Train 225. The CB&Q practice was to rotate the passenger E's between suburban assignments and Zephyr assignments. As a result, locomotives would lay over in Chicago at the Zephyr Pit (14th St. service facility), and on Sunday evening, the E's coming off the Zephyrs would be run out to Aurora on Sunday evening on the Dinkys (commuter trains) in preparation for the Monday morning rush hour, thus the expanation for the multiple E-units on this Dinky. On the adjacent track is Train #1, the westbound Denver Zephyr.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9943A on Train #25, the North Coast Limited, at Aurora, Illinois on November 1, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The Fireman was looking back for a highball, the waving kind, not the drinking kind. This photo also illustrates the difference between painted side panels and the stainless steel panels on the trailing unit.

CB&Q E8 9943A
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9943A and E7 9927B arriving at Aurora with Train Number 21, the Morning Zephyr, also known as the Twin Cities Zephyr, on November 14, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The Fireman was preparing to pick up train orders. The blunt end observation car was coupled to the baggage car. This was the practice in later years to save switching charges at Saint Paul. The power and baggage car would uncouple from the train upon arrival at Saint Paul, leaving the train at the station. The power would be turned and serviced, return to the station, couple to the train, and depart as Train Number 24, the Afternoon Zephyr.

CBQ commuter trains were called "dinkys" because they were short compared to the 17-car Zephyrs. This one isn't so dinky.

CB&Q E8 9945A
Description:
A pause in shoveling as Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9945A departs westbound on the middle track at Naperville, Illinois on January 25, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. A fortuitous click of the shutter if ever there was one. In the right background is the station agent at Naperville wheeling the two-wheel baggage cart across the tracks after loading from the power baggage car, a job I was permitted to do when business demanded. I was a paperboy at the time of the photo and Sunday supplements often arrived by train. On a busy day, I got to do the job.

CB&Q E8 9945A
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9945A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on February 25, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The building on the left was the Naperville News Agency, my source of employment as a newspaper boy in my early teen years. You may notice steam at the front of the locomotive. One of the principles of steam heat was that the steam eventually condensed back into water. Generally, the steam valves at either end of the train were cracked open slightly to let that water escape.
