NKP NW2 16
Nickel Plate Road NW2 16 at Calumet City, Illinois on June 13, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Classed as ES-10c by the NKP, it was built in October 1947 (c/n 4990) on EMD Order E854, it became NW 2016 in August 1967, and was retired April 17, 1982 and sold for scrap to Chrome Crankshaft. It appears to be set up for road service, with class lights and some device on the front truck for activating either signals or emergency brakes, I'm not sure which.

warren evans General Chuck! Whats on the front truck is a pickup shoe for Automatic Train Stop System. This sysytem is use for high passenger service it is a safety device for stopping a train if the engineer fails the to acknowlege the signal in the cab. this system also requires that all engines to run as a lead unit must also be equipped with this type of system no matter was speed and type of service. 8/21/2013 10:59:34 AM
Chuck Zeiler General Thanks for the info Warren, I was aware of the ATS/ATC system on the C&NW, but did not know the NKP had a similar system. 8/21/2013 2:16:54 PM
