Built by the Norfolk & Western shops in 1936 as class A articulated unit, it sported 70" drivers, developed a massive 300psi, had an overall engine+tender wheelbase of 108.27', and an engine weight of 573,000 lb. Although they had a rating of 13,000 tons slow freight, they could pull passenger trains at 70mph. The cheap coal available to N&W helped support these monsters of the rail until they were retired in 1958-59. |
