| As Amtrak service increased in the early 21st Century, the North Carolina Department of Transportation built a new station in Cary, eight miles west of the state capital of Raleigh. Opened in 2011, the new station featured a larger waiting room, restrooms, a staffed ticket sales window and checked baggage - along with many more parking spaces than in Raleigh (and a statue of a railroader!). The station also has bus service. On the north side of the station, on trackage owned by Norfolk Southern, the Piedmont and Carolinian trains make their stops, and on the south side is the CSX mainline, which is used by the Silver Star. And on rare occasions, passenger trains have been known to make stops on both lines simultaneously! |
