Coaling Tipple. Here is an original telephoto view that I took from atop the Pennsylvania Railroad's coaling tipple in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 11 September 1965. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8541, #8532, #8530, #8531, #8534, and #8535. All are ES-12M's built by EMD and rated at 1,200 horsepower each. #8541 was built in 1952, but all of the others were built in 1953. They are pulling a westbound 39-car mixed-cargo freight train past ANTIS Tower. The caboose is #477534. This is another view facing northeast. On the far left are the Westbound Receiving Yards, filled with rusting freight cars. On the far right, many dead-lined Diesels, old freight cars, and even some steam locomotive tenders are also visible. |
