Tom Beckett General That's the Jersey Central down below. The two roads ran often side by side, and always within sight of each other through the Lehigh Gorge. In 1965, the CNJ, like most northeastern roads, was in poor financial condition, as was the LV. They came to an arrangement where both roads abandoned trackage though the area, creating a hybrid line of both roads between Allentown and White Haven. by 1972, it didn't matter anymore, since the CNJ gave up the ghost in Pennsylvania, pulling back to Allentown, leaving LV the only game between there and Wilkes Barre. The LV itself would go into Conrail in 1976, and be largely abandoned west of Sayre PA. 11/14/2019 4:23:36 AM
Rev. Jonathan Spurlock General For an "after" photo of this engine, a summer 1969 issue of "Railroad" Magazine had a feature article by Bert Pennypacker called "When Stean Ruled the Lehigh Valley". The lead photo showed this unit, non-streamlined, and the caption mentioned that the rounded cab window indicated this unit had been streamlined previously. 11/14/2019 1:52:36 PM
