L&N Train No. 8
Late in the day, and late in its career, Louisville & Nashville train No. 8, the northbound PAN-AMERICAN, was heading out of New Orleans behind E8A 787 and another E8A. At this location, the train was operating over the Southern Railway and passing through CITY PARK. The train was discontinued with the start-up of Amtrak on 1 May 1971. The 787 was originally Frisco 2007 WHIRLAWAY, was purchased by the L&N in October 1965, was retired in April 1972 and went on to become Amtrak 226. (approximate date of photo)
