PRR 5826, BH-50, 1952
Lorenz. Here is a photo via Bob Lorenz that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in 1952. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5826 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60's rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and classified as BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5826 was constructed in September of 1948 and retired in September of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. In this context, they're pushing N-5B cabin car #477659 and a mixed-cargo freight train around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the "Centipedes" will uncouple and return to Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain."
