| The west portal of the original Cascade tunnel sits forlorn and abandoned. The Iron Goat Trail runs from the tunnel portal along the original right of way of the Great Northern route. This area is very close to the site of Wellington, a railroad town where two trains were swept off the mountain in an avalanche. The route was bypassed in 1929 when the current Cascade Tunnel opened for service. Today, a small creek runs through the old tunnel, which has been blocked for hikers. |
