PRR Altoona Works, #3 of 3, c. 1955
Hollyman. Here is the third of three photos of the Pennsylvania Railroad's Altoona Works. This photo was taken around 1955 by an unidentified photographer. At the lower left is the 17th Street Bridge and the Hollidaysburg Branch curving under it. Just to the right of the Bridge are the PRR's Test Plant and the Locomotive Test Plant behind it. Paralleling the mainline tracks (Pittsburgh to the left, Harrisburg to the right) between the 17th Street Bridge and the 12th Street Footbridge are the Altoona Car Shops. This area was once home to the Altoona Machine Shops and three functioning roundhouses. At the left end of the 12th Street Footbridge are the Passenger Station and its venerable trainshed. The next structure spanning the mainline is the 7th Street Bridge; the PRR's Passenger Car Shops are beyond it at the left.
