AEOLUS, CB&Q's #4000 Zephyr Diesel Substitute  Contributor's Pick!
Built by Baldwin as 3002 in 1930. The shroud was added (number changed and she received a name) in 1937 so AEOLUS could substitute for Zephyr diesels. A handful of other 3000 series locomotives were also shrouded and renumbered into the 4000 series. I assume once the Q acquired enough passenger diesels the shrouds came off. The smoky sky in the photo was no doubt added in the darkroom. I bought this slide years ago.

Chuck Zeiler General According to the Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin 14 on the two Aeolus locomotives, the shrouds came off sometime after the Christmas rush of 1941, much to the relief of the service crews. 10/15/2012 12:28:11 PM
