CB&Q E8 9972
Title:  CB&Q E8 9972
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9972 at Aurora, Illinjis on October 11, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Sinnce the days of steam, arriving Dinkys ( commuter trains ) at Aurora reLuired the power to be turned for the return trip to Chicago. A turntable was located behind the Aurora Depot for that purpose, as seen here. In less that a year from this photo date, six Budd gallery cars with control cabs would arrive and all but eliminate this chore.

CB&Q E8 9972
Title:  CB&Q E8 9972
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9972 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 10, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Of interest to perhaps only CB&Q fans, this locomotive is towing three Budd galley cars and no power car. The equipment behind the third gallery car is another train on the next track. At the time of this photo, an adapted E8 or E9 could power two galley cars with 72 volts from (at least one of) the auxiliary generators, since the only electricity needed on the gallery cars was for lighting. The air conditioning was powered by Waukeska engines mounted on each coach, and heat was provided by the locomotive's steam generator. So either this was an experiment or one of the galley cars was deadheading, just my best guess.

CB&Q E8 9972
Title:  CB&Q E8 9972
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9972 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 19, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is a Monday morning Dinky (commuter train), one of 30 Dinkys that the CB&Q dispatched in a 24 hour period out of Aurora to Chicago Monday through Friday, with a corresponding number returning. This particular train has the 7100 series coaches in tow, with one Budd bi-level coach at the rear of the train, and a power car carrying the markers. The class PA-14 7100 series coaches were built in the 1920's by the CB&Q with open ends, upgraded in 1949-1950 with enclosed ends and air conditioning, and given a paint scheme of forest green body, tan window panels, yellow stripes and lettering, aluminum roof, and black underbody. By the late 1960's, the PA-14's were withdrawn from suburban service, some lasted into the BN era in MOW service.

CB&Q E8 9972
Title:  CB&Q E8 9972
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9972 at Aurora, Illinois on September 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Note that the first car behind the locomotive is a cab car which would usually lead this train eastbound. Perhaps the cab car's controls had failed.

CB&Q E8 9972
Title:  CB&Q E8 9972
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9972 at Aurora, Illinois on September 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in August 1953 (c/n 18314) on EMD Order 2059A, it became BN 9972 and later was rebuilt to E9Am 9906. It is seen here on the turntable behind the Aurora depot. There was no roundhouse or locomotive facilities, this turntable was used to turn suburban service locomotives for the return trip to Chicago. The Burlington had received its first six bi-level control cabs during the summer of 1965, so the days of this turntable's useful life were numbered. The sign says: ENGINES MUST STOP WITH TABLE IN BALANCE, not much of a challenge for E8's and E9's, which just fit the turntable. Likely the sign was for steam locomotives, typically 4-6-0's and later 4-6-2's.
