Bisso Switchers
Title:  Bisso Switchers
Description:  Former Texas Pacific-Missouri Pacific Terminal Railroad of New Orleans (TPMPT) 0-6-0 numbers 1 and 2 were photographed in September 1951 at their new home, the New Orleans Coal & Bisso Towboat Co. The locos had been built by Alco-Richmond in June 1907 (42928-42929) as Trinity & Brazos Valley 75 and 76, for use at Galveston; but following the T&BV’s bankruptcy in 1914, the railroad lost its access to Galveston from Fort Worth over the Santa Fe and the two switchers became redundant.

The City of Houston bought the two locomotives via the Barry Equipment Co. in 1917 and they arrived on 31 March lettered Houston Municipal 1 and 2. They were leased to the International & Great Northern from March 1918 until October 1921, and were sold to Grant Locomotive and Car Works [of Houston] in1922. They subsequently moved to the TP-MPT where they retained their previous numbers.

In early 1948 the TP-MPT received four Alco S2 diesels, and the 0-6-0’s were sold to Bisso by August 1949. Besides operating coal-burning towboats and ferries, Bisso also provided coal for other vessels and used its locos to move hopper cars from a 2-track yard along the New Orleans Public Belt then up the Mississippi River levee to its coal-handling facility along the river. Bisso’s coaling operation ended around 1955, and with it, the need for any locomotives. No. 1 disappeared, and was probably scrapped; but No. 2 remained on Bisso property until 2010, when it was donated to the Louisiana Railway Heritage Trust. (approximate date of photo)

TPMPT 0-6-0 2
Title:  TPMPT 0-6-0 2
Description:  Texas Pacific-Missouri Pacific Terminal Railroad of New Orleans (TPMPT) 0-6-0 No. 2 was at the railroad’s RACE STREET YARD shortly before it was retired and sold to the New Orleans Coal & Bisso Towboat Co. The loco had been built by Alco’s Richmond Works in June 1907 (42929) as Trinity & Brazos Valley 76 for use at Galveston, then it became Houston Municipal 2 in 1917 and moved to the TPMPT sometime after 1921. After being replaced by Alco diesels, it - and its twin No. 1 - was sold to Bisso for moving hopper cars; however, No. 2 was never relettered for its new owner and may have never been used. Bisso’s coaling operation ended around 1955, but No. 2 remained on Bisso property until 2010, when it was donated to the Louisiana Railway Heritage Trust.

Bisso Towboat 2
Title:  Bisso Towboat 2
Description:  Bisso Towboat Co. 0-6-0 number 2 still wore the lettering of its previous owner, the Texas Pacific-Missouri Pacific Terminal Railroad of New Orleans (TPMPT), when it was photographed in 1980. The loco – and its sibling No. 1 – had been built by Alco-Richmond in June 1907 (42928-42929) as Trinity & Brazos Valley 75 and 76, for use at Galveston; but following the T&BV’s bankruptcy in 1914, the railroad lost its access to Galveston from Fort Worth over the Santa Fe and the two switchers became redundant.

Bisso Towboat 2
Title:  Bisso Towboat 2
Description:  This was the former Texas Pacific-Missouri Pacific Terminal Railroad of New Orleans 0-6-0 number 2 shortly after it had been repainted by the Bisso Towboat Co. Bisso had owned the locomotive for over 30 years, and finally decided to fix it up. The yellow stripe on the stack was a trademark of Bisso tugboats. The locomotive was built by Alco's Richmond Works (serial No. 42929) in June 1907 as Trinity & Brazos Valley 76, and was later TPMPTRRofNO number 2.

Bisso Towing #2
Title:  Bisso Towing #2
Description:  This shot was taken from atop the Mississippi River Levee at Bisso's yard in New Orleans. While the quality isn't great, it shows that the locomotive is still upright and on the approach to what is believed to be the old coaling trestle. The chain link gate to the right of the yellow gate was the where the rails once passed onto the property from atop the levee. Bisso #2 was originally TPMPTC #2
