In this context, it's pulling a mixed-cargo freight train up the Allegheny Mountains and around the Curve on its way to Gallitzin and points West. Description:  Here is page two of a two-page track plan by Mr. George A. Gloff entitled "Horseshoe Curve And Approach To Gallitzin Tunnels." It was published originally in the May 1952 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 29. Included here is a map depicting Altoona and the Curve's location relative to Pennsylvania's geography. Note that it is pushing this train up the Allegheny Mountains while in reverse! Partially visible to the left of the N-5 cabin car are at least two more helper engines: a pair of Baldwin "Centipedes." Produced and distributed by FJC Products of Newport, Delaware.

Description:  Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by John Pickett that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 13 October 1955. According to Peter Hultgren, this photo appears on page 74 of Don Ball's (1978) book "America's Colorful Railroads." Photo Caption: "The two GP-7's are assisting two E-8 passenger locomotives pulling train #14, a fast mail and express train to Pittsburgh." In the foreground (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8503 and #8502. Both are ES-15M's built by GM-EMD in August of 1952 and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. Also note the presence of PRR engine #6154, a J-1 (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during December of 1943 and retired in April of 1959 after just 16 years of revenue service. In this context, it's running backward on Track #2 on its way back down to Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." ("LouisFols"; #27 of 31)

Description:  iCurve. Here is the second of two successive images by John Pickett that were taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 13 October 1955. Prominent here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8503, #8502, and two "EP" Class units whose numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #8503 and #8502 are ES-15M's built in August of 1952 and rated at 1,500 horsepower each; they're helping to pull a mail and express train up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll uncouple and return to Altoona for yet another helper run up "The Mountain." Note PRR J-1 (2-10-4) "Texas" #6154 running backward on Track #2!
