Title:  AMTK HEP Baggage 693
Description:  Amtrak HEP generator baggage car 693 passing Metro North's Harlem 125th Street Station in New York City on an unknown day in June 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was built in 1947 by ACF as NYC baggage 9151, became AMTK 1215, then AMTK 1124, converted in 1977 to HEP car 693. I believe there was a diesel-generator set installed in this baggage car generating the three phase 480 volts HEP hotel power for the train.

AMTK Baggage 1129
Title:  AMTK Baggage 1129
Description:  Amtrak Baggage 1129 at Polk Street in Chicago, Illinois on October 12, 1987, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The book, Amtrak By The Numbers, lists number 1129 in the Steam Heated section of the book as built by ACF between 1946 and 1947 as NYC 9127, previous number was AMTK 1224, retired in July 1981. In the HEP section of the book number 1129 is listed as as former AMTK 1111, ex-NP 401. The following is from information compiled by Michael M. Palmieri: There were apparently two AMTK 1129's, the pictured car being second 1129. Second 1129 was built by Pullman-Standard in 1947 for the NP as water baggage car 401. Number 401 became AMTK 1201, then AMTK 1111, then AMTK 1129 after conversion to HEP. I was confused at first, so I sent a message to David Warner, one of the authors of the book, and he replied: Amtrak had two 1129's, one Steam Heated and one HEP. Since the the 1129 you photographed was taken during the HEP era, we structured the book to assume folks would look in the HEP section first. If you do that, on page 172, you'll find the 1129, and its non-HEP number, 1111. That takes you back to page 112 (Steam-Heated baggage cars) of our book, and there the earlier history of the car is contained, which, as you claim, is shown as the 1111. it was the former NP 401, built by PS in 1947.

AMTK Baggage 1139
Title:  AMTK Baggage 1139
Description:  Amtrak Baggage 1139 in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in April 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. PLEASE SEE COMMENT BELOW. According to the book, Amtrak By The Numbers, there were two AMTK 1139's, the one pictured is second 1139. The first 1139 was built by ACF in 1946-1947 as NYC 9170, became AMTK 1241, then AMTK 1139, then AMTK 695 (power car), retired in 1996. Second AMTK 1139 is a different story, the following information differs from the book, but the author(s) of the book have confirmed that Ted Brumberg (the comment below) is correct and offer corrections to the book at www.amtrakbythenumbers.com. While it resembles an ACF aluminum car, hence the rivet detail, the car was actually built by Saint Louis Car Company in 1962 as UP 6328, after ACF ended their building of passenger cars. The StLCCo. was a small builder of streamline equipment, including the former Army troop hospital and kitchen cars that went on to serve AMTK into the 1980s. After around 1960 StLCCo. began constructing cars for several roads after ACF left the market, following construction plans and diagrams previously developed by the railroads. What is more, 1139 was not sold to Amtrak until 1977 (becoming AMTK 1077), being rebuilt to HEP sometime after 1984 (becoming second AMTK 1139). It's worth noting that any time you find a smooth sided, non-Budd passenger car (baggage and coaches) in the Phase III striping (like on 1139) it was a St. Louis Car Co. car... pretty much the only other builder whose cars were actually in good enough shape to be rebuilt with HEP (the other exception were a couple of ex-Southern Railway baggage cars built by Pullman Standard as baggage - mail, becoming AMTK 1126 and 1127 after being converted... a testament to the extent of maintenance the SOU strived to maintain when keeping their passenger cars in good shape). For the record, the book shows AMTK 1139 as ex-UP 6331, which actually became AMTK 1126, sold in 1992.

AMTK 2023
Title:  AMTK 2023
Description:  Amtrak Slumbercoach 2023, named SILVER REPOSE, at about 18th Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in November 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 2023 was built by Budd in 1955 on Job 9691-169 as CB&Q 4903, named SILVER REPOSE. Inside were 24 single bedrooms and eight double bedrooms. The CB&Q recieved four Slumbercoaches (#'s 4900-4903) delivered during October and November 1956. The NP and B&O also had Budd Slumbercoaches. I rode in one Slumbercoach on the Denver Zephyr during August 1964, and I can attest the that single bedrooms were compact. Although each single bedroom had a toilet, it was covered at night once the bed was lowered. If you required the toilet during the evening, you had to open the door, step into the hallway, raise the bed, do your business, get back into the hallway and lower the bed. Not a problem for me as I was 16 at the time and my bladder was young.

Description:  Amtrak 2150, named SILVER FLOWER, stored at Michigan City, Indiana on July 12, 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. For a brief period of time, Amtrak parked a few sleepers and other surplus cars on some unused tracks in Michigan City. Number 2150 was built by Budd in 1952 as CB&Q 460, same name. Six cars were ordered on Budd Job 9658-112, all configured 6-4-6 ( 6 section, 4 bedroom, 6 roomettes ), ordered in March 1951 and delivered between August and September 1952. Two cars were assigned to the Blackhawk (Chicago - Minneapolis), two to the American Royal Zephyr (Chicago - Kansas City) and two to the American Royal Zephyr (Chicago - Saint Joseph). The Burlington publicized the direct service to Saint Joseph to compete with the Santa Fe and Rock Island. The four bedrooms were located in the middle, and this view shows the aisle side passing those bedrooms.

Description:  Amtrak 2435, named PACIFIC MEADOW, at about Roosevelt Road and Michigan Avenue in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in July 1982, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. There was a railroad trade show on the site of the former IC Central Station and Amtrak had a few pieces of rolling stock on display. Number 2435 was built by Budd in 1950 as UP 1426, named PACIFIC MEADOW, and that name carried over when the car became AMTK 2619, rebuilt to HEP in December 1980 and renumbered 2435.

It became Amtrak 2660 and upon conversion to HEP in September 1982 was renumbered 2465, retired in July 1995.

AMTK Sleeper 2651 SILVER SHORE
Title:  AMTK Sleeper 2651 SILVER SHORE
Description:  Amtrak 2651, named SILVER SHORE, in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in March 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 2651 was built by Budd on Job 9660-019, ordered in October 1945, delivered between September and November 1948. This car was one of 19 10-Roomette, 6-Bedroom (10-6) sleeping cars configured to Pullman Plan 9509. These cars were for the California Zephyr and were divided among the four participating railroads; six cars were assigned as CB&Q, five cars D&RGW, seven cars WP, and one car PRR. The Silver Shore was CB&Q number 424, later, BN 424, before going to Amtrak, retired in October 1983. It went to Quad Graphics and was assigned number PPCX 800062. Note the child observing from one of the middle windows.

Number 2652 was built by Budd on Job 9660-019, Pullman Plan 9509, as a 10-Roomette, 6-Bedroom (10-6) sleeper for the CB&Q's contribution to the California Zephyr, CB&Q number 425. It was one of 19 such sleepers ordered in October 1945, delivered between September and November 1948. The 19 cars were divided among the participating railrods with six cars going to the CB&Q. It became AMTK 2652, at some point lost the skirts (as seen on the car to the left), and was retired by Amtrak in October 1983.

Number 2860 was built by Pullman Standard in 1949 as Southern Railway 2020, named TYE RIVER, a 10-Roomette, 6-Bedroom (10-6) sleeper, acquired by Amtrak in 1979 when Southern exited the passenger business, became AMTK 2860, sold by Amtrak in December 1981.

Number 2213 was built by Pullman Standard in 1947 as AT&SF 905, INDIAN FLUTE, as a 24 Duplex Bedroom sleeper, rebuilt in 1964 as an 11-Bedroom sleeper, retired by Amtrak in July 1981.

Also of interest, perhaps only to me, is the upside-down Purolator Armored truck in the background by the red crane, showing evidence of gunshots to the windows.

This car was built by Budd in 1950 as UP 1428, same name, as a 10 Roomette, 6 Bedroom (10-6) sleeper, sometime after May 1, 1971 became AMTK 2621, upon conversion to HEP in February 1980 became AMTK 2893, became a Dormitory Sleeper and was renumbered to 2507 in February 1998, retired October 2006.

Number 8503 was built by Budd on Job 9624-169, ordered in February 1955, delivered in October 1956. The Budd Job was for two diners for the CB&Q's Denver Zephyr, number 201, named the SILVER CHEF, and number 202, named the SILVER TUREEN. Number 201 became AMTK 8054, and was converted to HEP in December 1979 and renumbered 8503. It was wrecked at Batavia, New York in August 1994. A total of six dining cars were built on Job 9624, three for the CB&Q, one for the D&RGW, and two for the WP, all assigned to the California Zephyr. The SILVER DINER became AMTK 8051, was converted to HEP in September 1979 and renumbered 8500, was converted to Griddle Diner in January 1987 and renumbered to 8551.

Built as a 5 Roomette - 3 Double Bedroom dome sleeper by Budd in 1948 as C&O 1851 (named CHAMBERLIN DOME, not applied), it was sold in December 1950 to B&O and renumbered 7601 and named STARLIGHT DOME, leased to the ACL (12/65-4/66) for Richmond-Miami 'Florida Special', to CN #648 (lease 5/66-3/68) for 'Expo '67', SCL (lease 7/68), sold to SCL in July 1969 and renumbered 6801, sold in 1970 to Hamburg Industries Augusta SC - refurbished and leased back to SCL (with Hamburg Ind. ownership plates), sold to Amtrak in 1971 and renumbered to 9201, retired October 1981. It suffered fire damage to the first bedroom in Old Mexico yards at Los Angeles 11/81, to American GK/Paul McKeehan (8/84) Canoga Park CA, rebuilt with end windows on the non-vestibule end as well as wrap-around fluting as the STARLIGHT ROMANCE - in Tustin CA for mechanical work to be completed by Bill Hatrick. Moved early 2006 to storage in Saugus CA.

AMTK 9251
Title:  AMTK 9251
Description:  Amtrak 9251, named SILVER PENTHOUSE, at Kansas City, Missouri on October 7, 1994, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 9251 was built by Budd on Job 9659-019, one of three 3 Bedroom, 1 Drawing Room, dome observation bar lounge cars (Plan 9511) for the CB&Q's contribution to the California Zephyr, ordered in October 1945, delivered in December 1948. It became AMTK 9251 and was retained for Amtrak President W. Graham Claytor for conversion to Amtrak Business car 10002(2) . That plan fell through as there were too many height restrictions and an Amfleet car became available. It was retired by Amtrak in October 1981. In 1993, the Burlington Northern Railroad purchased the car and placed it in storage. The car resurfaced in February, 1999 in the Chicago area, and from there it moved south in May to Topeka where it was significantly modified in order to turn it into a conference room. The interior has been completely gutted, the dome floor has been removed, reducing the iconic Vista-Dome to a glorified skylight, and the car's floor is now one level. The windows which used to provide viewing pleasure for the bedroom passengers are now blanked over, and the windows under the dome have been reconfigured to match the others in height. Two doors have been cut into the left side of the car, to facilitate handicapped access. The car was moved to BNSF's corporate headquarters at Fort Worth, and renamed PRAIRIE VIEW.
