Steam action
Title:  Steam action
Description:  A G5 comes to a stop at Huntington(note the UN telegraph code on the train order mast) some time around 1940. At the time, the easternmost point on the Port Jefferson Branch was Wading River; I don't know if the train originated there or at Port Jeff. It will continue into Jamaica. This is a far cry from the Huntington of today. The electrification was extended here in 1970, and MU's now run here every 30 minutes most of the day, with a change to diesel trains for the rest of the ride to Port Jeff. It's also a lot more built up!! The photo was given to me by a friend who found it while cleaning out his grandmothers attic about 35 years ago. Dont know the photographer, but its a sweet shot. The Pennsy parentage of the locomotive is apparent, not only by design, but by the NL on the pilot beam, denoting the New York Division, LIRR.

BO 4-6-0 #117, "Thtacher Perkins" - Baltimore & Ohio
Title:  BO 4-6-0 #117, "Thtacher Perkins" - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  This is a nice photo of the historic B&O 4-6-0 #117 "Thatcher Perkins" on display at the 1939 World's Fair in New York. According to the B&O RR Museum where the loco now resides, ""This engine was the next step up from earlier 4-4-0 American type locomotives. It was built at Mt. Clare, during the Civil War in 1863, and honors its builder Thatcher Perkins. Designed for special purpose to pull heavier war passenger trains on the mountainous part of the B&O between Cumberland and Wheeling. The 4-6-0 class represented the culmination of the balloon smokestack required for wood fuel. Later engines burned coal and had bigger boilers and shorter stacks to fit under bridges. It was first exhibited by the railroad in 1892 and again in 1927 at the Fair of the Iron Horse." It also appeared in 1934 Chicago "Century of Progress" and again at the 1939 New York World's Fair (this photo). This photo is from the Ralph G. Dunn collection.
